Soulforce was founded as an organization with the purpose of nonviolent resistance of oppression of LGBTQ people by religious fundamentalists. During our fifteen years of activism, we have made tremendous strides in engaging anti-LGBTQ forces to stop the violence of their words, policies, and actions by showing the human face of the suffering they have caused.Soulforce staff, volunteers, and activists have always realized that oppression wears many masks – racism, sexism, ageism and ableism, and exclusions based on one’s religion, immigration status, and economic class. We have found inspiration in the dignity and ingenuity of those who have blazed the trail of nonviolent activism, particularly in the African-American civil rights movement in the United States and the anti-colonialist movement in India.

Our teachers have always told us, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” So with the understanding we have gained from working on issues of LGBTQ liberation, Soulforce finds itself growing and adapting to take on multiple issues of oppression as they relate to religious fundamentalism.

The term for this is “intersectional justice,” which is just a way of saying we can do work that leads to justice across multiple forms of oppression without forgetting the experience of our own journey.

It is with this understanding of the need to reach out to broaden the scope of our work that Soulforce is starting a groundbreaking new online community called SolandRes [Solidarity + Resistance].

The working assumption of Solandres is that many oppressions (sexism, racism, transphobia, ageism, homophobia, xenophobia, just to name a few) share common roots in fundamentalism in the United States.

Solandres will provide a platform for the many communities struggling against fundamentalism to grow their capacities as movements by sharing best practices, interacting across social locations, building a shared analysis of fundamentalism, and identifying alliances out of the shared understanding that many oppressions have a common root.

Specifically, Solandres is an online community and a resource site—a home for all of the information, stories, experiences, and skills accrued from activists’ work in their local communities to achieve equality and dismantle oppression.

Solandres will be facilitated by Zachary Pullin, the Logistics Coordinator of the 2012 Equality Ride. Zach identities as a Native American gay man.
