Take Action — Contact Family Policy Councils about “Religious Freedom” Bills

Last month, we sent out an e-mail explaining the growing problem of “religious freedom” bills in the states. Laws that would allow wedding businesses and hotel and restaurant owners to refuse service to LGBTQ people under the guise of religion have already been signed into law in Mississippi. Another has been proposed by ballot initiative in Oregon. Legislatures in Kansas, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Arizona have considered or voted for these bills.

It turns out some familiar figures of the Religious Right are behind these laws. (See a Soulforce graphic explaining this relationship here.) Focus on the Family and the Family Research Council work with “Family Policy Councils” in 47 states to propose anti-LGBTQ laws to state legislators. They provide research and communications support through their propaganda arm, CitizenLink. (See a CitizenLink video about Focus on the Family’s “religious freedom” efforts.)

So now, we’d like you to take action!  We have compiled a list of all the Family Policy Councils across the country, and we’d like you to contact the one in your state!

Tell them about your family, about your marriage or commitment, about your sense of faith and values. Tell them what we have all learned from our involvement with Soulforce: that faith and family cannot be limited to narrow, exclusive definitions.

We’d like you to send a postcard, a letter, an e-mail, a picture or video, describing how your family can be hurt by these so-called “religious freedom” bills.

A few guidelines:

    — In the spirit of Soulforce dialogue, we ask that you use loving and compassionate language that will
truly engage the individual(s) you contact.

   — We encourage you to take the time to seek out individual e-mails, or address a letter or post card to individuals in the organization rather than sending it to an anonymous Web contact form.

    — We ask that you identify yourself and include a return address, in case there is a chance they would like
   to respond to your message.

Then we’d like you to take one more step:  tell us about what you did!

   — Send an e-mail to Soulforce (richard@soulforce.org) with the message you sent to your state’s Family
Policy Council and any other pictures or information you sent.

– If we get a message from you, we’ll take that as permission to post your messages, pictures, or videos     on our Facebook page and Web site, to share your witness with the world.

Here’s your chance to act! Tell the state forces that are trying to oppress LGBTQ people about your lives and how you will be affected by these laws!

We’ll keep you posted on the results. Here are the addresses:
